The Bauhaus school was founded in Germany to create a functional architecture and design that responded to industrialisation. Yet, although it existed as a school, first in Weimar, then in Dessau between the years of 1919 to 1931, it wasn’t limited by time or geography. After the Bauhaus moved to Dessau, a school of industrial design with teachers and staff less antagonistic to the conservative political regime remained in Weimar. This school was eventually known as the Technical University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and in 1996 changed its name to Bauhaus-University Weimar . Der in den 1920er Jahren in Weimar und Dessau spielende Film handelt von einer jungen Frau, die am Bauhaus studiert. Das Bauhaus in Dessau gilt als Ursprung der modernen Architektur. Das Bauhaus war eine Kunstschule die 1919 von Walter Gropius in Weimar gegründet wurde. The director of the Museum of Fine Arts at Dessau, a town of some 90,000 inhabitants, about sixty-five miles from Berlin, persuaded the Burgo-master of the town, Herr Hesse, to ask Gropius to move the Bauhaus to Dessau to increase the prestige value of the town. The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 in the city of Weimar by German architect Walter Gropius (1883–1969).

Designed by Walter Gropius building began in the summer of 1925 and was completed by October 1926. The construction was experimental, using a reinforced concrete skeleton, with floors made of hollow tiles resting on beams. It had flat roof covered with a waterproof skin, which later proved inadequate.

In 1925, the school had to be moved to Dessau. Gropius decided to take advantage of the opportunity to create a building that would embody the Bauhaus principles. Bauhaus was an influential art and design movement that began in 1919 in Weimar, Germany.
